15 Spring Neutral Essentials

With the spring season kicking into gear, I wanted to show you some essential neutral pieces you can add to your closet.
I have compiled a grouping of neutral clothing, shoes and a couple bags. Not only are neutrals hot for spring, but they give you a bigger bang in your closet because the outfit possibilities are endless! You’ll notice all these capsule items are casual everyday pieces. They all can mix and match with each other and with items already hanging in your closet. Once you have some basic neutrals, you can add in other trendy pieces, still sticking with the neutral theme, or adding a splash of color.

1. A white blazer will be my go-to layer all spring and summer long. So long are the days of wearing a blazer only for a corporate job! Mix the versatile blazer into your wardrobe and have it take you from day to night in a snap. For day, pair with a cotton tank or graphic tee and denim, along with a white sneaker. For night, throw the blazer over a cute cami with jeans, a heel or wedge and a coordinating clutch. The blazer in my capsule is a linen blend with a single button. There are many options/fabrics to choose from, so I have included others to shop at the end of this post.
2. A white or ivory leather bag will take you all throughout the spring/summer season and depending on the color tone, right into fall. I have included 2 options in my capsule. A crossbody bag has quickly become a favorite of mine, especially for daytime errands having my hands free. I’ve had the white Chloe crossbody for a couple years and wore it all the time! I linked the smaller version of this bag, equally as cute. The ivory leather Staud mini tote I have in my capsule is buttery soft and coordinates with almost everything. It can be used for the day (as a smaller option) or worn for a casual night out…super versatile.
3. A denim jacket is the perfect spring and summer layer over tops or dresses. So many varieties with distressing or go for more of a clean look as well. I’m always grabbing a denim jacket as I run out the door, as the “just in case it gets chilly” layer.
4. A short sleeve sweater is a little warmer option than a t-shirt on chillier days. In my capsule, I chose a basic cashmere tee, but if cashmere isn’t for you, a classic cotton sweater would be perfect. Go for white, ivory or a nude tone so you can wear it with any of your denim, as well as a skirt or shorts. You can choose a neutral style with fun sleeve detail or woven fabric. At the bottom of this blog entry, you can Shop the Post where I have included other options.
5. Spring stripes are the quintessential spring print…a little nautical, but always classic. I tend to lean toward a neutral stripe, to make it a bit more understated. Also, when choosing a neutral stripe, you can mix prints and pair with something floral. I’ll show you this in future posts. The tank I have in my capsule is actually one of my favorite layers. It’s bra friendly and the white is not see through…score!
6. A “not so basic” t-shirt is a closet staple. What do I mean by “not so basic”? Right now there are so many t-shirt options to pick from. I’m not talking about the giant boxy t-shirt you sleep in, but a tailored cotton T with great detail like the adorable puff sleeve option in my capsule. A t-shirt and jeans is the ultimate no brainer outfit, but make it special with fun details like a ruffle or a little poof on the sleeve. Always good with denim, but also pair with a skirt, joggers or shorts heading into summer. I have included some other cute t-shirt options at the end of this post.
7. A lightweight long sleeve sweater is an essential piece just like the short sleeve sweater. Spring is all about chilly mornings and evenings, so having those extra layers to grab are important. The sweater in my capsule is a very light weight comfortable v neck with distressing around the neck and seam. Those little details make an otherwise boring sweater a little more visually interesting. This sweater is one of my favorite new pieces in my spring closet! I love nude tops paired with white denim for a clean crisp look, but any denim would look great with this!
8. Distressed denim is a great way to add a little edge to your outfit. Wear them as you would any other denim…casual during the day with a sneaker or slide, to girls night with a feminite flowy top and a wedge or to a date night with a cami, blazer and heels. Another versatile staple that you will wear all year round. I have on the AGOLDE Riley distressed denim. Love the higher waist on these as they hold in all the things!
9. A t-shirt dress is another easy option for a comfy daytime look. Go above the knee, or midi, either style looks great with a white sneaker, slide or leather flip flop. Choose long sleeves, short sleeves or sleeveless…the dress I chose in my capsule has long puff sleeves, which makes it a “not so basic” t-shirt dress. Super easy, one and done casual everyday dressing. More options below!
10. A white dress is the spring and summer replacement of the LBD. Along with white denim, I always say “I can’t wait till spring to wear white dresses!”. They always look so bright, classic and fresh. And I love to mix it up and wear different lengths or fabrics…eyelet, denim, gauze, lace or just plain white cotton. The dress I have on is a denim mini with a tie sash at the waist. I love the playful ruffle detail and the fact that you can wear it from day to a fun casual night out.
11. A neutral maxi dress is a great one and done option for your closet. It’s a simple one piece, I don’t have to coordinate anything, item in your closet, because sometimes we just don’t want to think! I’m looking forward to wearing more dresses this year, as in 2020 I wore mostly leggings and sweatpants! I love the fact that you can take a maxi dress from day to night, simply by changing out your shoe or jacket. A denim jacket and sneaker or slide for the day, and a white blazer and wedge for the evening. Done!
12. White denim is something I live in all spring and summer. I feel like I’m always saying “that top would be cute with white jeans!”. In this capsule, they can go with any of the casual tops I have shown. But, they look especially great with a feminine spring top. I will be highlighting some of my favorite spring tops in future posts. The white denim I have on is the AGOLDE Riley high rise straight leg denim, but I have some other favorites that I will link below. I always look for denim that are mid to higher rise, are not too thin so you can’t see the lumps and bumps and you can’t see through to the pockets.
13. A leather slide is the season’s newest trend. It’s a great option instead of a leather flip flop. These shoes are everywhere with many colors, styles and price points. I included 2 great neutral options in my capsule, both with braided leather.  The black Marc Fisher slide and the nude slide by Steve Madden. Both super comfortable, trendy, cute and price conscious. I will also include a few other neutral options below.
14. A leather mule is the easiest slip on slip off shoe when you want to keep your toes a little more covered. No pedi? No problem! A classic spring staple, I would get a neutral pair to go with anything. I have had my Gucci mules forever, they are a hefty investment but last forever. You certainly don’t have to splurge on an expensive pair…I will link different price points below.
15. A clean white sneaker is something every closet should have as they go with everything. I’m so into this trend because they are versatile and comfortable! Pair them with denim, dresses, skirts, shorts…the list goes on. You can splurge on trendier pairs, or keep it simple with a pair like the JCrew white sneaker in my capsule. They are SO comfortable and I love the hit of snake detail on the back of the shoe. I’ve included a few other options in the Shop the Post section below.

Alysia
